Year 6 – 10 Sports Highlights from Term 3
Year 6 Gecko Sports at Orana
Year 6 students have been getting active and putting their coordination, balance and body awareness to the test through a series of gymnastics sessions with Gecko Sports, supported through the ACT Schooling Grants program.
With a gym full of equipment to explore, students have been building foundational gymnastics skills including safe landing techniques, body positioning, weight-bearing, balance and controlled movement. They have also been challenging themselves on the mini trampoline, learning how to jump, land and move with greater confidence and control.
The sessions have offered students a chance to try something different, work with their bodies in new ways and build physical skills through hands-on experience. And there is more to come: on Friday 11 September, Year 6 will take on their next challenge with an introduction to Parkour.
Year 7 & 8 Boys Southside Soccer at Mawson Playing Fields
Orana had a Boys year 7/8 Football team that attended Mawson Playing fields on the 21st of August. This was a fun day where the boys got to play multiple games against other schools in the southside of Canberra. The boys won two of their games, it was a great day out and the boys represented Orana with great spirit.
Primary and Secondary Track and Field at Woden Athletics Park
Primary Track and Field
The top two students in each event at the Orana Athletics Carnival were invited to represent the school at the Southside Regional Track and Field event on Thursday, 20th August. Our students competed across multiple events and gave their best effort, demonstrating great determination and enthusiasm throughout the day. We were also very proud to have several Year 10 students volunteer at various events, helping the organisers and contributing to the smooth running of the day while also working towards their volunteering hours. Congratulations to Marlow Kilborn, who performed exceptionally well and qualified to represent Orana at the ACT Championships in the 800m and Long Jump.
Secondary Track and Field
The top two students in each event at the Orana Athletics Carnival were invited to represent the school at the Southside Regional Track and Field event on Wednesday, 26th August. Our students represented Orana to a very high standard, demonstrating excellent teamwork and respect, commitment and enthusiasm throughout the day. In between their events, students also went above and beyond by assisting the event organisers wherever they could, showing great initiative and respect for the wider school community. Congratulations to Banjo and Mimi, Freyja, Ainsley and Callum, who performed exceptionally well and have qualified to represent Orana at the ACT Championships on 22nd September.
Secondary Softball at Hawker International Softball Centre
Orana students from several year levels recently came together to represent the school at the Hawker International Softball Centre, competing against schools from across Canberra.
The event provided a fantastic opportunity for students with a passion for softball to take their skills beyond the classroom and enjoy a day of competition, teamwork and plenty of fun. Our students finished second in their pool, with the day offering a wonderful chance to build connections across year levels and come together as a team.
It was fantastic to see students with a shared sporting interest supporting one another, developing their skills and enjoying the opportunity to represent Orana.
Year 8 – 10 Netball Gala Day
On the 31st of August Orana had a girls team attend the Southside Netball gala day. We had students from year 8 up to year 10 in the team. They played amazingly and showed great enthusiasm. The girls almost made it into the Semi-finals but unfortunately lost their last game against Melrose by only three points, but held in the lead for most of the 16 minutes. Students represented Orana well, a big thank you to Zac in year 10 for assisting all players in their positions, making sure all players had an equal amount of playing time and being encouraging from the sideline. We also want to thank Rob for coming along and being Orana’s umpire, his help and assistance was truly appreciated!
Years 9 & 10 boys and Girls Football Gala Day at Mawson Playing Fields
On the 17th of August, Orana had two teams participate in the Southside Soccer Gala Day at Mawson Playing Fields. Both teams competed against some athletically talented schools and demonstrated excellent determination, teamwork and resilience throughout the day. Our students represented Orana to a very high standard, particularly when faced with challenging situations and varying levels of experience from other teams. Players remained focused, composed and respectful, refusing to allow external distractions to affect their performance or behaviour. The boys had a fantastic day, winning their first game and coming very close in several of their other matches. The girls also demonstrated great effort and determination, playing to the best of their ability throughout the day. All students displayed a positive attitude, supported one another and gave their best in every game. Overall, both teams should be extremely proud of the way they played and represented Orana. Their resilience, teamwork, perseverance and respectful behaviour were a wonderful reflection of our school community.
