Craft Group

Ever wanted to learn how to make those lovely Steiner toys your children are playing with?  Want to earn your community hours meeting new friends and discovering new skills?  Come and try Craft Group!

We meet in the Kurrajong room on Fridays and Saturdays or Sundays (see below for dates) and enjoy a cuppa and a chat while creating marvelous items in the Steiner tradition.

We supply all the materials for you to make wonderful works of Steiner-inspired art for sale at the Spring Fair. And no need to worry if you are all thumbs – there are always plenty of helpers to support you and teach you the tricks that make the craft come together.  Children are welcome on Fridays under your supervision, and on Sundays if another adult comes with them to supervise them as they play in the garden.

We’ve got lots of projects to work on, so if you are an old hand at craft, or if you have never tried DIY Steiner, come and join us – there is no nicer way to earn your community hours than filling the Craft Group stall. And we are always on the lookout for new creations - if you want to do your craft time at home, please get in touch with us through our mailbox. We particularly love to hear from woodworkers, as there appears to be an insatiable demand for handmade wooden Steiner toys!

Contact [email protected] if you want to join our mailing list or to become an at-home crafter, or just drop in one day for a warm welcome.

Term 3 2019

We’re doing some classic Steiner craft this term – stitching the more complex and magic felt animals, such as dragons and unicorns, learning the art of making lifelike Steiner doll heads and creating peg dolls for a wide range of uses, such as nature tables, fairy tale sets and just for fun stocking treats. So once again there is something for everyone, from the newest crafter to the old hands.

If you want to contribute to Craft Group but can’t make it in to one of our sessions, please get in touch with us – your support is really important in our quest to make every Spring Fair better than the one before!  While out-of-hours crafting can count towards your hours, we also need to make sure everyone is doing something which will fit the Steiner framework and that we aren’t going to end up with 1000 ducks and no toy boats.  So one of the co-ordinators will need to approve anyone doing at-home craft before you can count it for community hours as well as agree the hours to be claimed per item under the new community hours arrangements.  If you’ve got a brilliant idea for something new, please bring a sample to show us – we love learning more about the creativity of the Orana community.

If you have been making things at home for us (THANK YOU!), this is the term to bring them in – so we can sign off on your hours and get ahead with the pricing and stocktaking for the Spring Fair.

We are continuing to offer weekend crafting for people who can’t make it in on Fridays. Dates for Term 3 2019 are:

Friday 26 July

Friday 2 August

Saturday 3 August

Friday 9 August

Friday 16 August

Friday 23 August

Sunday 25 August

Friday 6 September

Sunday 8 September

Friday 13 September

Friday 20 September

Saturday 21 September

Friday 27 September

NOTE: there will be no CG on Friday 30 August

Just a reminder that Fridays run from 9 to 12.30, and that children are very welcome. Weekend craft days run from 11 to 4, so you can drop in when it’s convenient.  Weekends are child-free, so we can focus on making the most of the crafting time.

Keep an eye on the CG Pinterest page for amazing craft goodies which have inspired us in previous years (https://au.pinterest.com/bluecardy/orana-craft-group-ideas/ ) as we’ve fallen in love with about a million different peg dolls!  Or drop in one day and look at the CG display cabinet in the foyer of the Kurrajong room to see what we’ve been doing recently.

We’re always keen for new crafters to join us – and we’d love to share the joy of CG more widely through the Orana community. Come for a cuppa and stay for some craft time!

We’re looking forward to meeting you this term at CG!
