"... we must be glad that we can come together in the spirit of wanting to bring about a better future for humanity by working together with those who are trying to raise and educate the generations to come in the sense of real knowledge and of love for the human being."

P&F constitution ~ Class coordinators

The Orana P&F is a separate entity from the School Association with its own constitution.  It exists to support the teachers' work through fundraising, social and community building activities.  A representative of the College attends P&F meetings to report on the College and Core Group meetings, and vice versa.  The President of the P&F represents this group at Council (see below for more information).

Parents are automatically members of the P&F, and can become members of the Canberra Rudolf Steiner School Association (CRSS) by completing a nomination form; teachers are members of both associations. Both groups encompass all of us and provide a tangible body for parents of the Orana school community. Everyone is welcome to attend the AGMs.

Orana School's organisational structure

The school is a not-for-profit association, incorporated in the ACT. Staff and parents who fill in a free membership form (available at the office) are voting members of the association, management of which is provided by two main committees. These are the College of Teachers, responsible for educational direction, and the School Council, who provide management support to the College of Teachers.

The School Council is made up of both staff and parents, with the majority being parents. The Council meets about once a month during term time, and deals with a wide range of matters covering finance, property, development, human resource management and community building. Some of these activities have School Council subcommittees dealing with them.

The Parents and Friends Association (P&F) is a separate body to the above, but works closely with the College of Teachers and School Council to support "fund raising and fun raising" to support the Orana community. By convention, the P&F president has a seat at the School Council. Parents with a strong interest in Orana are most welcome to attend Council meetings as observers, or nominate for Council or its subcommittees, which include Finance (including Buildings), Bioscape, Governance, Community Hours and Sustainability.

The relationship between the P&F and other school bodies is illustrated by this diagram

The P&F Association constitution

The P&Fs constitution currently says that the objective of the P&F is to promote and support the establishment and maintenance of the Orana School by:

  1. Actively pursuing fund-raising activities to provide for equipment, maintenance, and services beyond the means of funds otherwise available to the school;
  2. Co-ordinating and initiating the volunteer efforts of parents and friends  in the physical improvement and maintenance of school buildings;
  3. Initiating and co-ordinating social events to foster a spirit of community within the school;
  4. Identify and undertake activities aimed at improving the image of the school within the wider community;
  5. Endeavour to increase awareness and understanding of Rudolf Steiner's philosophies among parents and friends of the wider community; and
  6. Identifying and initiating any other such activities as are deemed to meet the objective of the Association.

Suggestion box

A P&F suggestion box is located in the Front Office - all comments and suggestions will be gratefully received.

Class coordinators

The Class Coordinator supports the class teacher's work, providing essential communications link between parents and teacher and assisting in the smooth running of Orana School's social and fund-raising activities. Class Coordinators are an important link in the school communication network so it is not only essential that each class have one, but also that they carry out their responsibilities.
